A Salute to the Maintenance Crew

I am sure there were more than a few students who saw the snowstorm last Thursday, knew more was coming on the next day, hoped for a snow day and tried to sleep in on Friday morning.
I was not one of those students, mainly because I had to get up at 6 a.m. anyway for ROTC training, and also because I consider myself a tough, hardy person. But, as my roommate and I walked out the door for training, I found some people who are tougher than me: the Utica College maintenance crew.
While we trudged through the foot and a half of snow Friday morning, a couple of members of the crew were already showing up to shovel, plow and snowblow the multitude of snow.
The sun was barely up in the sky, but there they were, ready to go. They had to report earlier than they usually do, but they were there to do their job.
I noticed last Friday that many students like to complain when they have to go to class after a snowstorm, either walking or driving through the snow and the ice. They seem to cry for a day off after every little bit of snow that shows up.
But, I also noticed that the maintenance crew does not complain about having to come in early, at least not outwardly. They just get to work clearing the walkways so that students can get to their classes with little trouble.
My hat is off to those maintenance people, and I give them all the respect in the world for the job they do, moving the snow out of the way so that the campus can continue functioning and students are able to attend all of their classes.
Maybe instead of wasting time complaining so much, students should spend the time thanking the maintenance people who get up early and work hard so that the rest of the campus, students and faculty, do not have to.
It is very much a thankless job, but I am here to say thank you to the maintenance crew for coming to work no matter what the weather conditions.
