How to Double Date for Less Than $50

A lot of people that go to UC say there is not a lot to do around the Utica area. So we decided to do a little investigative reporting about double dates. What we found might surprise some people who thought it would be hard to do a double date for $50 or less.
There is a difference between an inexpensive date and a cheap date. However, it is not the cost that determines the difference. Taking your girlfriend or boyfriend, for those women who like to treat their man every now and then, to McDonald's and telling them they can only get something off the Dollar Menu is not a way to score points. However, going to a decent sit-down restaurant that does not cost an arm and a leg might do the trick.
Both of us decided to take out our significant others for dinner and a movie. The goal was to do it all in under $50 and we did it. And we think you can too.
Movies have gotten so expensive over the last few years, and since there are only a few theaters near UC, it can really make your wallet cry. The Marquee Cinemas: Orchard14 in New Hartford charge $9.25 for adult admission to movies after 6 p.m. So we decided to watch a movie at the matinee prices, which are $7 at The Marquee. Leaving the theater, we had only spent $28 for the four of us. We caught a 3:45 showing of "Dear John," which left us with 30 minutes to get to Applebee's in time for half-price appetizers.
Applebee's offers half-price appetizers Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Upon arrival, you have to mention that you intend to buy these appetizers so they seat you accordingly at the bar. Everybody in our party chose an appetizer. We sprung for mozzarella sticks, loaded potato skins, boneless honey BBQ wings, and spinach and artichoke dip. Sharing the appetizers was enough fill everyone up with food leftover. The total came to $15.44.
Our grand total came to $43.44. Not only did we spend less than $50 on four people, it even comes to roughly $11 per person.
This isn't only a great deal for couples. Four girlfriends can take this opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive night out.
Other variations of an inexpensive date could include X-treme bowling. Granted this will increase the price by roughly $20, you get unlimited games and it also includes your shoe rental. This will total $67.44, which is about $17 per person.
If you're the kind of couple that prefers to stay in, you can order a large pepperoni pizza from Venice Pizzeria on Oriskany Blvd. for pickup for $15.50. Two DVDs from Blockbuster will add another $10 to your tab, keeping you under $30.
Regardless if you'd rather go out or stay in, dating in Utica can be fun and inexpensive if you only look for it.
