Super Bowl XLIV will be played in Miami, Florida on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. Although it may seem no different than any other Super Bowl, this one looks to be one of the most entertaining in recent memory.
Two high powered offences will take the field, both led by two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Four times NFL, MVP Peyton Manning, will lead 16-2 Indianapolis Colts into Sun Life Stadium in search of the second Vince Lombardi Trophy in four years. On the other side of the ball fellow Pro Bowl Quarterback Drew Brees and his 15-3 New Orleans Saints will be taking the field in the organizations first Super Bowl appearance in 43 years as an organization. New Orleans, just five years removed from its state of Louisiana being devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
The Colts are averaging 26 points a game while giving up 19.2. The Saints average 31.9 a game and allow 21.3. Both teams average more than 270 passing yards a game and passing is exactly what is expected to happen Sunday. A lot of passing. Of the 5,809 yards that the Colts offence has produced this year, Manning's arm has accounted for 4,500 of them while Brees has thrown for 4,388 of the teams 6,461 total yards.
At the beginning of the season and well past the halfway point, both the Saints and the Colts were undefeated and the whole sports world was talking the possibility of a Super Bowl matchup between two undefeated teams.
Those thoughts were erased when the Saints lost to the Dallas Cowboys in week 15. The Saints lost the final two games after the loss to the Cowboys and the Super Bowl hype turned into playoff questions.
The Colts saw their unblemished season go down the drain when the New York Jets beat them in week 16 and the Buffalo Bills in week 17. There was some controversy behind the Colts two losses because of their coaching staff's decision to rest their starters for some of the Jets game and all of the Bills game.
The two teams have faced four of the same opponents this year as well. Both teams beat the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. The Colts how ever have also lost to the Jets once and were defeated by the Buffalo Bills.
