The Utica College Reserve Officers Training Core honored its cadets for their fall semester achievements, as well as its graduating seniors at an award ceremony in the library concourse on Wednesday, Jan. 27
Cadets received awards for academic excellence, as well as excellence and improvement in physical training.
The detachment's color guard was also recognized for performing their duties at UC home football games. A uniform inspection was also done at the ceremony.
"Overall, it was a success," Cadet Capt. Joseph Hillman said. "Many cadets earned awards. We're looking to do better at the end of this semester."
Hillman noted that this year marks continuing progress towards the UC detachment becoming independent of the Syracuse University detachment, as the college towards independence from SU.
"Four years ago to now, we've come a long way," Hillman said. "We've become a well-functioned unit. We've still got a lot of work to do."
The event also hosted a senior branching ceremony, where senior cadets are placed into their respective Army branches.
Hillman, a senior, was placed in the military police while fellow seniors Cadet Maj. James Gibbs, Cadet Lt. Kindra Fiveash and Cadet Capt. Christopher Strain were assigned to the armor, signal and aviation branches.
Currently, the UC detachment is preparing for its military ball on Saturday, Feb. 13.
