The year 2009 just seemed to be full of surprises for the entertainment world. Perhaps when Michael Jackson died in June, it was the most shocking death not only was he the "King of Pop," but many could say his death was so unexpected.
During our Christmas break, it wasn't anything different. Three more celebrities passed away for various reasons. Drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan from, the rock band, Avenged Sevenfold, actress Brittany Murphy, and soul singer Teddy Pendergrass.

Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan was found dead at his Huntington Beach, Calif. home at the age of 28. According to an article from MSNBC.com, the police say that he died from natural causes. Fan would have to wait a few more weeks to find out the exact cause.

Some of the students at UC who are fans of A7X were surprised to hear about Sullivan's death.

"I couldn't believe it," Junior Kristin Smith said. "I was a big fan of them and I loved their music. I've got their entire CD on my iPod."

Other reasons why people were so shocked about his death was because of how young he was. Sullivan was only 28 years old when he passed.

"It's crazy! A lot of people are losing their lives at a young age," UC Senior Jeffy Charles said.

Brittany Murphy's death came as a surprise to a lot of fans as well, and provoked quite the response on Twitter and Facebook. Her mother found Murphy, who was well known for her role in the 1995 film Clueless and the movie 8 Mile alongside Eminem, unconscious in her shower. She suffered from cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead Dec. 20.

Her cause of death is believed to vary from natural causes such as a previously undetected heart condition, type-2 diabetes, or unconfirmed thyroid problems.

Just like Sullivan's death, students were upset by Murphy's.
"When I heard about it, I cried," Sophomore Michelle Mensah said. "It was horrible. Nobody could replace her."

Besides Clueless and 8 Mile, Murphy was also known for her roles in the movies Bongwater, Girl Interrupted, Happy Feet, and Sin City.
