America's Best Dance Crew, one of MTV's many reality shows, is back. Season 5 of ABDC premiered on Jan. 28 with a regional competition. Only five dance crews from the South performed for three spots on the show to eventually compete for the $100,000 grand prize.
With only three spots to fight for, the Southern crews had to bring their best moves. Judges JC Chasez, Lil' Mama, and Omarion chose two crews that automatically have a spot to compete for the grand prize. The other three crews had to earn their spot by dancing in a sudden death round. After, the judges pick the top crew for the final spot.
Jungle Boogie, from Georgia, whose specialty is "crankin," was the first to perform for the judges. Ghost, a crew from Texas, performed a more spiritual kind of dance. Ghost uses dance as their escape from all the hard ships in their lives. X-Treme Motion, also from Texas, performed a "bootylicious" upbeat routine of what they called "buckin," which is a form booty shaking that requires one to be flexible and "get low". Swagger Crew from Atlanta, GA came on stage not only determined to win over the judges, but also proved their cockiness with their "raw swagger".
The last group to compete was Royal Flush, also from Atlanta. This was Royal Flush's fifth time auditioning for ABDC and finally their luck changed and they were allowed to come to the regional competition.
Jungle Boogie and Swagger Crew were chosen by the judges to continue on without having to battle for their spot in the national competition. The remaining three crews had to fight in the sudden death round. In the end, Royal Flush prevailed, breaking their streak and filling the last position for the South's roster in the national competition.
There are only two regional competitions left, the East and the West. The East regional competition episode will be aired Thursday, Feb. 4 on MTV on the 10 spot.
The national competition with the final crews will start airing on Feb. 18 at 10.
