Student Senate approved a proposal that disappointed and outraged the Greek community on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Student Senate decided to add $3,000 to the $12,000 budget of the Inter-Greek Council from last year, approximately $333 more for each fraternity and sorority since we have nine active Greek organizations on campus. However, the dilemma mainly lay in the fact that Greeks are not allowed to go in front of the Financial Committee for individual funding, while non-Greek organizations are still eligible for unlimited funding.
After Tina Williams, a Phi Sigma Sigma sister, submitted a petition asking for equal funding right and two Tau Kappa Epsilon brothers, Keino Purcell and Tuvi Orlokh, gave a presentation offering our arguments on the issue on November 4 following by a heated discussion, Student Senate remained uninfluenced and our case was not passed.
Student Senate said that not enough Greeks have asked for funding from the Finance Committee in the past few years. Within last year, Chi Beta Sigma's Air Band and Phi Sigma Sigma's Dance-A-Thon seemed to be the only two events that required funding from Student Senate. Student Senate felt as though Greeks have not shown the proper utilization of funding. The reality is that the Finance Committee refused to deal with Greeks and our funding issue, which led to the verdict of limiting our funding this year and stripping away our right to ask for individual funding.
Addressing the allocation of the budget from last year, Greeks can provide a long list of events from the 2008-2009 academic year that used up roughly $13,000 from Midnight Breakfasts to mixers and Rush Weeks. This year's events have been just as abundant and diverse from charity walks to Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Forums.
"These events have great turn outs and provide something for students to attend and engage in," Jessica Mauer, the president of IGC, said. "More importantly, most of the proceeds made from these events have gone directly towards philanthropies, which overall benefit causes greater than the student body."

I think that the Greek community have reasons to be outraged.
