The Utica College Pioneers men's hockey team opened its season Friday night with an exhibition game against the United States Under-18 National Team.
But, the game was not much of a contest and the national team controlled the puck throughout all three periods, handing the Pioneers a season-opening 10-1 loss before a crowd of 3,676 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.
Team U.S. struck early in the game, grabbing control of the puck from the Pioneers right from the opening face-off.
Then, the national team went on a tear just before the halfway point of the first period, pounding in three goals, including a power play goal, in just over a minute of play. The first period ended with team U.S. ahead 3-0.
The national team kept things rolling in the second period, knocking in four more goals, including another power play goal, and shutting out UC to move in front 7-0.
The Pioneer offense got in its only goal early in the third period, but team U.S. came back with three more goals, including a third power play goal, to win the game 10-1.
