The Utica College Pioneers snapped a two game losing streak to defeat Elmira 2-1 in the Empire 8 opener at Elmira.
After trailing 1-0 in the first half, the Pioneers scored two unanswered goals in the second half, which helped the Pioneers reserve the victory. Samantha Simmons scored the first goal assisted by Candice Avion Ashton. The game winning goal was scored by Mallory Mariano unassisted.
The Pioneers played on grass, which was classified as thick and bumpy. "It took us a few minutes, but the team was able to adjust to the grass field," said UC Head Coach Sarah Bergmann.
"It took us a little bit of time," added Assistant Coach Brittney Paye.
Field issues aside, the Pioneers are now 1-0 in Empire 8 play. "We are happy that we won the game, but we have a lot more challenges ahead of us in the conference," said Bergmann. "Our goal is to definitely make the Empire 8 tournament."
The Pioneers are well aware that Empire 8 competition could really be unpredictable. "It's still early; we haven't seen the rest of the competition so we don't know where we stand." Said Bergmann.
The Pioneers are 1-0 in the Conference, 3-3 overall. Their next game will be on the road in non-conference action as the Pioneers take on Geneseo State on Wednesday September 23rd at 4:30 pm.
