Actor Patrick Swayze died on Monday from complications of pancreatic cancer. He was 57 years old and is survived by his wife, Lisa Niemi.
Swayze had been suffering from cancer since 2008, and according to the Washington Post, his pubic battle "helped raise awareness of this most deadly disease."
Some of his greatest works include the 1983 film The Outsiders based off the book by Susan Eloise Hinton.
The 1987 classic, Dirty Dancing, made him a star and a heart-throb among all girls. It was the film that really set off his career, according to the Boston Herald. He made people believe that "nobody puts baby in the corner."
He played in Jerry Zucker's 1990 film Ghost with Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. Ghost helped bring back his career and earned Swayze his second Golden Globe nomination. In the past decade, he starred in films like Donnie Darko with Jake Gyllenhaal and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.
Like the Boston Hearld said, "Only Patrick Swayze could make the pachanga steamy."
Swayze's death was the latest in a string of celebrity deaths this summer. Some other important icons such as Ed McMahon, Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Billy Mays died at the beginning of the summer.
Jackson died from cardiac arrest, while McMahon and Fawcett had been battling cancer. Mays died of a drug overdose and heart complications.
Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein and Senator Ted Kennedy died in August. Goldstein died of drug overdose, and Kennedy died from complications of brain cancer.
