The senior class is leaving its mark with a "Runner with a Heart" sculpture. This will be the first statue of a series to be installed within the city of Utica, according to Senior Class President Ewa Szymanska.
"Since UC is the host for the Heart Walk and the Boilermaker runs through the campus and we have many seniors which are dedicated to sports, this was an easy idea to choose as the senior gift," she said.
The senior class is asking all seniors to donate $5 towards the gift. Honorary alumna and Vice President for Planning and Analysis Carol Mackintosh will donate $10 for every donation of $5 or more.
Steven Specht, Associate Professor of Psychology at UC, will paint the statue.
"The senior class is extremely grateful for his contribution and his enthusiasm to share his talents with the UC community," Szymanska said.
Specht is also excited about the senior gift.
"I absolutely love the idea," he said. "The greater community of Utica has a strong arts and culture presence. It's very fitting that this year's senior class has decided to make a significant contribution in the area of community arts."
The design is still being developed, according to Specht. He continues to receive suggestions about the art design from several seniors and hopes more seniors will contact him with ideas.
"I will try to incorporate and integrate ideas along with my own to make a coherent and aesthetically pleasing sculpture of which the senior class can be proud," he said.
The sculpture will be painted over the summer and should be complete by the fall 2008 homecoming. Ideas for the design of the sculpture can be sent to Julie Carroll at jmcarroll@utica.edu.
If you are interested in donating to the cause, go to utica.edu/donate and select "Class Gift" in the drop down, or send it to the Office of Institutional Advancement through campus mail.
Zack Hutchinson, a senior communications major, is not so enthusiastic about the sculpture.
"I don't know what to really think about the senior class gift. I could go into all the rhetorical dimensions about the statue, but I'll try to keep it short," he said. "I think it symbolizes the indomitable human spirit and how we persevere through whatever is put in front of us. It's a nice gesture, I suppose."
The Senior Class will hold a Senior Pub Night on Thurs., May 15, from 7 to 11 p.m. in Pioneer Café and the Senior Ball is on May 16, from 8 p.m. to midnight.
