Utica College's Lunch Hour Series welcomed fiction writer, Philip Memmer on February 20th. He is the founder of the Downtown Writers Center, and also the Director of Arts Branch at the YMCA in Syracuse, N.Y.

He has previously appeared at UC for a reading. He is the author of three collections of poetry: "For Resident," "The Apartment," and "Sweetheart Baby Darling." "Sweetheart Baby Darling" can be found in the bookstore.

His new book, "Threat of Pleasure," will be published this summer. He began with reading some of his work from "Sweetheart Baby Darling," including "Wife Test," and "Weather Where you Are."

Memmer describes his new book as a story about the life of Lucifer, and how it starts with the beginning of his life, and ends in his death. He read poems from his upcoming book such as The Birth of Lucifer, Lucifer's Beginning, Lucifer Makes a Snow Angel, and Knowledge.

"This book is more of a 'I can't stand this teen-rebellion'," said Memmer when discussing his book. "Lucifer leaves Heaven and lives on Earth."

While talking about how he edits his pieces, he quoted an unknown author, "Writing is re-writing." Memmer said that he found it very helpful to re-write some of his pieces before publishing.

Sarah Warring, a junior at UC, attended the Lunch Hour Series for a class, but said she attends all of them.

"I think he was really great, and I would definitely go and buy one of his books," she said.

Most literature classes require students to attend the events, but they are also for teachers and people in the community.

The Utica College Social Cultural committee sponsors the Lunch Hour Series.
