That simple cliché that you can hear in any elementary classroom across the country is the basic belief that makes me a conservative. How you might ask? Well, by all means, let me elaborate.
That is a quote about personal responsibility. It's a quote telling the dangers of a handout and the problems with a free lunch. That problem is, once you give someone a free lunch or a handout, it is not long before they are in desperate need of another, and then another, and another and another. It's a vicious cycle.
We all hear the sob stories about the hard times people fall on. My friends can attest to the fact that I've had some tear-jerkers to tell myself. When a bleeding-heart liberal hears one of these Shakespearean tragedies, they have a knee-jerk reaction. Their material instincts kick into overdrive. They want to cuddle and coddle the poor soul facing all this undo drama. They want to mother the victim through the hard times. The problem with that is, like the mother who refuses to face the fact that her little baby is all grown up, they just can't let go.
It's not enough for a liberal to help you through a jam. They want to keep helping you out as long as you're still breathing. Because liberals don't believe the individual is qualified to run his or her own life. The liberal believes that a vast portion of the American public can't fend for themselves. They believe that uneducated people, inner city minorities, single moms, and a whole host of other demographics are doomed to be poor and miserable. And in believing so, they feel the need to steal from the rich and give to the poor.
But when you give people things that they should be earning on their own, it sends a bad message. There is a saying that welfare breeds welfare, and it couldn't be any truer. It's called an entitlement mentality. They begin to feel they are entitled to more and more handouts and forget what it is like to earn anything. Then their children see this and think it's the way the world works, so a new generation of takers is born. Once again, it's a vicious cycle.
It is said that conservatives don't like the poor. That couldn't be further from the truth. Conservatives don't want the poor to be poor. We know that everyone falls on hard times and might need assistance. But conservatives want to assist you in helping yourself.

The last large paragraph makes it sound like liberals are going to have an unwanted child as opposed to getting an abortion. If conservatives had their way, then we liberals would be royally f***ed. (Continued…)

But you see Travis, the hypothetical situation I pose, is not so hypothetical, it happens every day, despite abortion being legal.
And by the way, I am pro-life, or anti-abortion or whatever you want to call it (except for situations where the mother's health is in danger). (Continued…)

A quick though on Conservative vs. Liberal thought. A recent study done by scientists at New York University and UCLA reported in the journal Nature Neuroscience that political orientation is related to differences in how the brain processes information. (Continued…)
