Elections for student representatives to the Student Senate, class officers as well as senators, took place this past week through an online voting process.

Online voting opened on Friday, September 14 at 12 p.m. and concluded yesterday at 1:30 p.m. Election results were not available for the Tangerine at press time.

There were three contested races in the elections for freshmen class president, freshman class vice president, and freshman class senators.

Devorne Hormeku and Amanda Sulicz were campaigning for the office of freshman class president.

Hormeku is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from James Madison High School. He was a member of Model United Nations in high school and was also a certified peer mediator.

He would like to see more social events on campus so that students can get to know each other and socialize in a friendly environment on a relatively small campus. He also wants different cultural events so that students can learn about other cultures and traditions from their peers.

"Democracy is defined as for the people by the people, and that's how I want to run my presidency," said the public relations major. "I would want the people who voted me in to have an active role in the decision making."

Sulicz comes to UC from West Palm Beach, Fla., after graduating from Lake Worth High School. She was active in student government while in high school, as well as several community service activities.

She would like to have more recycling bins in the residence halls and promote a more environmentally friendly campus. She also hopes to get new recreation equipment for North and South halls.

"I would have an open door policy where all freshmen can come to me with their ideas for a better year or come to me if they ever need help with anything, and I'll assist them to the best of my abilities," the physical therapy major said.

Megan Habernig and Eden Van Alstine were in the race to become freshman class vice president.

Habernig hails from Latham, N.Y., and graduated from Shaker High School. Currently, she is an undeclared major although she is considering going into communications.

She decided to run for vice president in order to become involved in campus life and represent the students. If elected, she hopes to work with the class president to represent the freshman class.
