Tuition Will Take A Hike

Effective June 1, 2007, tuition will be $24,264 per academic year. That is an increase of almost $1,200, or just under 5 percent, from this year. This makes five consecutive years that tuition has been increased.
According to the letter, there are several reasons for the raise in tuition including adding new programs, expanding the campus and improving campus life for students.
UC has added a number of new academic programs that require additional money to fund. New cybersecurity and information assurance majors have been added with the goal of positioning the college as a global leader in the fields of "hi-tech" and "white collar" crime detection and prevention. To aid that goal, UC has established a new national research center that focuses on the security issues of the information age. A new bachelor's degree in foreign language is also starting up in the fall. With all of these additions, UC will have 32 total undergraduate programs.
The school has also expanded its graduate educational programs. UC introduced its eighth education master's program in 2006 with the new Master of Science in Educational Leadership Degree. The college is also offering two certificate programs in the educational field, school building leadership and school district leadership.
With all these new programs, it was only logical that the college would need more space. Some of the tuition money is being spent on the expansion of the college. Students can log onto www.utica.edu and watch their tuition dollars at work with the construction of the new science building. The under-construction F. Eugene Romano Hall is only the first in a multiphase plan for a state-of-the-art science and technology complex, with more to come in the future.
The college is also planning to add new furniture to help students relax and socialize, and is going to offer free laundry services for students who live in the dorms.
Those are some of the places our extra money is going, but is that enough to justify the hike to UC students?
The tuition increase has changed freshman Kaylan Alban's future schooling plans. "I was having enough trouble paying the tuition as is was," Alban said. "Because of the tuition, I am transferring to SUNY Oneonta next term. Their tuition has gone up too, but not like it has here."
