Utica College students have been receiving e-mails encouraging them to fill out student opinionnaires. The opinionnaires, which used to be handed out in paper format during class, are now online for students to do at their leisure on a voluntary bases.

The opinionnaires provide a way for students to give UC faculty feedback about what is going on in the classroom, as well as allow students to critique the professor's attitude toward students and the subject that each professor teaches.

Some students say they use the opinionnaires as an opportunity to either vent or give praise to their professors who the student either likes or dislikes. Students even admit that this is usually based on whether or not the student did well in his or her professor's class.

However, not all students fill out the opinionnaires with that attitude. During a conversation with some friends, most of them said they do not judge a professor on how well they did in the class. My friends said they judge professors on how passionate they are about their work and if the professor's style of teaching is understandable and effective.

The opinionnaires also provide professors with some useful information. Professors can learn about how their students really feel about the classes they are teaching, and the opinionnaires can give professors somewhat of an idea about whether of not their students are gaining anything from the class. Some professors even change their teaching methods based on comments on the opinionnaires.

In general, student opinionnaires help the college as a whole. When it comes to hiring and firing professors, the opinionnaires can help determine which professors will be eligible for tenure.

Sophomore Andre White, who is a computer science major said she feels that student opinionnaires are a good way to let professors and the school know how students feel about each professor's work. "Student opinionnaires are cool because it is a good way to let professors know what they need to work on in the classroom. I'm not saying that whatever it is they have to work on is a bad thing, it also means that there is room for improvement in the way that they teach their classes."
