Last year's team finished the season with a school best 31-11 record, and the team also made it to the Empire 8 tournament for the first time and finished second in the ECAC Upstate Championship.
"Last year's team was good," said senior right fielder Kristen MacDonald. "But I'm very confident in this year's team and think we can do very well."
Doing very well should not be a problem because the team returns several starters from last year's record setting squad.
"We return some of our starters from last year, including two starting pitchers," said head coach Pat Mineo. "We're just looking to get better as a team, compete and go farther than last year."
Coach Mineo, who was also named Empire 8 Coach of the Year last season, also brings in a more than capable staff with assistants Marybeth Yerdon, who played Division I softball at Binghamton, and Vaughn Saville, who will be very instrumental in working with two sophomore pitchers that started as freshmen last season, Andrea Curley and Kallie Mathis.
The Pioneers will see their first live action of the season when the team travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to participate in the Snowbird Softball Tournament.
"Myrtle Beach is about coming together as one team and basically learning how each other play," said junior third baseman Brittany Johnson.
The lady Pioneers begin the regular season on March 12 against Mt. Aloysius, PA. This game will count for more than just an exhibition, as games against Pennsylvania teams now count towards their regional record because of the new region alignment by the NCAA. The Pioneers will play their first home game on March 25 against Russell Sage at 1 p.m.
