Fire In Residence Hall Raises Awareness

Balcom added that a specific type of lamp, a 5-light, multi-colored floor lamp, is now going to be added to the list of banned items.
"A flyer is going to be passed around to residential students and posted in the dorms about this light," Balcom said. The flyer states that this popular lamp started two fires at SUNY Fredonia when the shade of the lamp melted and began to heat other objects in the room, specifically a bedspread and a poster.
Balcom stressed that monthly health and safety checks will be conducted again soon, and they are being taken very seriously after this incident.
"If rules are broken by residents, they will be documented," Balcom said.
"While I cannot release specific details about the punishment that the two residents received and will receive, I can say that events this severe are dealt with in the quickest manner possible by the Student Disciplinary System," Balcom said. Other students breaking the rules will be dealt with in a severe manner as well, she added.
"I just want students to realize how many other people a fire can impact," she said.
The e-mail read that if students notice anything that seems like a safety or fire hazard, they should report it immediately to either Campus Safety at 611 or 792-3046, Environmental Health & Safety at 792-3135, or the Office of Residence Life at 792-3285.
